About Eastern

What we do

The places where we live and work can provide us with beauty and inspiration as well as function and utility. Starting with the needs and desires of property owners, we work with the characteristics of the site to build unique landscapes that are beautiful and meet the day-to-day needs of the owners. Beginning with site assessment and design, through construction, installtion, and ongoing maintenance, we can help solve your landscaping problems, whether the setting is a subruban neighborhood, corporate campus, private school, park, or publicacess facility.

The “soup-to-nuts” range of services we offer gives us an advantage over most other landscaping companies. We deal with all aspects of land management, so our services are coordinated, integrated, and efficient. This “one-stop-shopping” makes our customers’ lives easier, as they don’t have to coordinate many different service providers. And, we can also save them money because we can often accomplish a number of tasks in one visit. Lawn care, shrub and tree care, new construction, mulching, irrigation, clean-up—we do it all!

We believe in partnerships, not only with our customers, but with our staff and employees, our suppliers, and with the other professional associates we work with. This collaborative approach offers distinct benefits for everyone involved. We are committed to closely working with our customer in solving their landscape problems, and are fully invested in the success of any project we undertake.

History

Beginning in 1979 with selling newspapers as part of a high-school, work-study program, eastern owner and president John Engwer has built a company with clients throughout the northeast that include homeowners and all types of businesses. Continuing his newspaper business on his own after graduating, john quickly realized there were opportunities to meet some of his customers’ landscaping needs. He began by offering a lawn-mowing service, and soon added firewood delivery. In the next few years, with the lawn service growing, john added paving and other hardscape work to an expanding list of services. From those early days, the company has steadily grown to become a complete land-care company and a leader in the landscaping industry.

The same spirit of innovation that characterized the company’s beginnings continues today. Eastern keeps up with current developments in the industry, and, with its sister company groundscapes express, inc. Has become a leader in developing and implementing cutting-edge landscaping practices. One of the most notable of these is the use of compost and compost-based materials.

Realizing the limitations of traditional methods of controlling erosion and stormwater damage, john sought out and consulted with a west-coast company that had pioneered the use of a truck-mounted blower machine that could efficiently blow wood bark mulch to properties on a large scale. Groundscapes was the first company in new england to use this type of powered, blower truck to apply compost as a soil amendment, and later, to use compost-based mulch blends in stormwater management applications. Once the efficacy of compost had been demonstrated for this use, john developed and patented the filtermitt™, a biodegradable, hessian tube to hold the compost-mulch mix, which provides more options for using these materials. Groundscapes express, inc. Was founded to specialize in these services, and that company supports many of eastern’s projects by providing compost to topdress and build lawns, control erosion on slopes, mulch planting beds, and to build soils for different applications. Read more about these technologies on the groundscapes web site, www.Groundscapesexpress.Com.

Sustainability

It’s a little ironic that the landscaping and horticulture professions—which deal closely and directly with the natural environment—have so often used practices and materials which can damage our natural resources and even cause health issues. Non-native, invasive plants used in landscaping have escaped into natural areas, spreading rapidly and displacing native plants. Sythetic fertilizer can be washed off lawns and into lakes and streams, which starts a damaging chain of events in aquatic systems. Heavy use of certain kinds of lawn pesticides has caused health problems for homeowners and their pets.

Environmental responsibility infuses the work that we do and how we run our business. We utilize many practices and materials which not only protect the environment but are also highly effective. For example, we use only fertilizers made from naturally derived materials, we emphasize the use of plants which require minimum care and maintenance, the consideration of water resources is always a key part of any design we develop, and we try to maximize the use of locally produced materials. In fact, a sister company of eastern’s produces compost and mulch materials that eastern uses in its work. These compost materials utilize locally generated materials such as food waste, leaves collected in the fall, and tree trimmings. Diverting these materials from landfills and reusing them for building soils and mulching makes good environmental and economic sense.

We also recycle as much of material that is generated in the course of doing business as we can, such as plastic pots, office paper, demolition materials from site renovation. In the colder months, our office is heated with an efficient, woodfired boiler. In the descriptions of our services, you can find further information about some of the many ways that our business is based on environmental responsibility
